Lenses and coatings

Lens index decides how thin a lens can be, and coatings decide how it handles reflections, scratches and smudges. Your prescription, frame size and centration matter as much as the index you pick.

Index is only one part of thickness

Index describes how strongly a material bends light. With the same prescription and frame, a higher index gives a thinner lens. Frame size counts too: a smaller, well-centred frame often makes a bigger difference than moving up an index.

IndexWhat to consider
1.57An entry option for mild prescriptions; suitability depends on prescription and frame.
1.61 / 1.61 ProA thinner option for moderate prescriptions; compare material and design as well as price.
1.67 / 1.67 ProOften chosen for stronger prescriptions where edge thickness shows.
1.74The thinnest option here; not automatically the best optical or weight choice.

Coatings are separate choices

Anti-reflective coatings cut reflections from lights and screens, so others see your eyes rather than glare. Hard coatings improve scratch resistance but do not make a lens scratch-proof. Water-repellent finishes make cleaning easier.

Caring for coated lenses

Coatings last longer with gentle care. Rinse with lukewarm water before wiping, use a drop of mild soap, and dry with a clean microfibre cloth. Avoid hot water, household glass cleaners and leaving glasses on a car dashboard in the sun, which can craze a coating over time.

Index and coating questions

Which index do I need?

There is no universal cutoff. The lens step shows which indexes are offered for the prescription you enter.

Will a high index lens be lighter?

Usually thinner, and often a little lighter, but frame size and lens design matter as much.

How do I clean coated lenses?

Rinse with lukewarm water, use a drop of mild soap and dry with a clean microfibre cloth. Avoid paper towels and clothing.
